. the problem with the west coast is it is storm after storm that is going to pound california and oregon and washington state. you can see the next one is already making its way onshore, and we are looking at heavy rain, especially across northern california. you can see a closer look. that band of heavy rain just to the west of northern california, that's going to move onshore, and we are going to see a series of these rounds of heavier pockets of rain move in, especially this afternoon. winds will get gusty as well. we had a lot of delays yesterday because of the bad weather out in california. we will most likely see more of those today. look at some of the expected rainfall totals over the next 48 hours. we could end up with some parts of northern california, just north of redding, possibly picking up more than a foot of rainfall out of this system, and it does look like that will continue for most of the week. lynn? >> dylan, thanks so much. >>> and for the rest of us, it was another day of facing the fiscal cliff. white house negotiators head to capitol hill today. they're going to

of this never ending conflict. the truth is that the california nurse's association is trying to protect the richest contract in its union and the richest contract, for that matter in the entire country. both sides acknowledge that, but the truth is also that hundreds of part-time nurses could end up with no health care at all if the proposal is pushed through. power, it's a relative term for the california nurses association. a total of seven strikes in just over a year has netted little progress and no deal on a union contract that expired in the middle of 2011. >> what we're asking for is nothing more than what we have. we're not asking for anything more than the contract that we have. >> but the contract the nurses have, which includes three hospitals in the east bay, is the richest in the country. by both sides' admission. >> they're very, very well compensated, and they should be. the bay area is expensive. they're the top of the heap. >> just how high up on that heap is up for debate. using the same w-2 forms, health officials say the average nurse pulls in $136,000 for a full-tim

, wind and rain. the national weather service issued a number of severe warnings. get this. california's mt. shasta could see an incredible 18 feet of snow over the next several days. nbc's meteorologist bill karins has details for us. bill, what can you tell us? >> as far as the snow goes, that's at the highest of elevations where no one lives. the only areas that will get the snow is possibly to the south in the central cascades. it's really the rainfall that's the big concern, the amount that's going to go into these rivers basins. as they accumulate and it continues to rain over the weekend, we're going to have flooding concerns. this morning we're soaked right now. the heaviest rains have shifted into the mountains. it's still raining pretty good. san francisco to san jose, a continuous steady rain out there. the real downpours have moved towards yuba city. this storm system is one piece of it. you can see the plume coming into california. there's another piece behind that has to kick through on saturday. it doesn't look like until monday, lynn, this area will have a dry day. majo

're urging students to call police if they see anything suspicious. >>> four men from southern california are in fbi custody facing terrorism charges. the fbi says that group allegedly plotted what it calls a violent jihad to kill americans here and abroad. they were allegedly planning to join al qaeda and the taliban in afghanistan. now, the four suspects were arrested last friday. coming up at 5:10, we will have a live report from southern california with the latest on this current investigation. >>> 4:34. happening now, air strikes pummeled gaza overnight and rockets hit southern israel as secretary of state hillary clinton heads to that region today. we've got a live look at the gaza strip this morning. israel targeted 100 sites overnight, including terror tunnels and ammunition storage facilities. at least five palestinians were killed, ten wounded so far in those attacks. in response, gaza militants fired 60 rockets towards southern israel. in the meantime an israeli man with a knife and an ax attacked a security guard today at the u.s. embassy in tel aviv. the guard was slightly wo
